What is Dr. Gifford's Philosophy regarding various types of counseling?
A major goal Dr. Gifford has in counseling is finding solutions as quickly and effectively as posible. Dr. Gifford believes it is important to be focused and goal-oriented in finding practical answers or solutions to the problems presented.
An important part of finding solutions is making the most of the sessions. Dr. Gifford often suggests homework assignments or recommends reading that the client can pursue between sessions to enhance the therapy process.
Coping Skills
For many clients, developing coping skills is of major importance. Dr. Gifford places emphasis on skill building in therapy.
Marriage Counseling
In marriage counseling sessions, Dr. Gifford believes improving communications is a significant goal and she works with couples to develop win-win solutions. Most couples do not want to find a villain, but rather want to make the relationship more positive and communication more effective. Both parties must be present to engage in marriage counseling.
Child/ Adolescent Therapy
In child therapy, the family is always included in setting goals and become active participants in the process. The child too is an active participant to work on the team with parents, teachers, and Dr. Gifford. Initially the child and family are seen together, and subsequently the child may be seen individually but the parents remain active participants. All aspects of confidentiality are observed.
Medication
If medication is needed, Dr. Gifford routinely works with the client's primary care physician, pediatrician, or psychiatrist in the community. If a patient does not have a primary care physician, Dr. Gifford can give a referral list of well-qualified and trusted physicians.
All Therapy is Results-Oriented!!
